Properly put on a blood pressure upper arm cuff

The doctors preferred method of blood pressure measurement is the measurement on the upper arm. It is considered more accurate than the measurement on the wrist. There are now many upper arm blood pressure monitors for home use, which automatically perform the measurement and give all the important basic information (systole, diastole, pulse and any abnormal heart rhythm). If you want to perform the blood pressure measurement on the upper arm yourself, it is not only important that the cuff size is correct, but also that the cuff is put on correctly. This is the only way to achieve a reliable measurement.

Here you can see what to pay special attention to. Where exactly should the hose be located, that connects the cuff with the blood pressure monitor? And how much space should be between the skin and the cuff?

Make sure to only tighten the cuff so much, that there is space for one finger to fit between the cuff and the arm. By the way, the correct position of the cuff is located above the elbow region.

Some blood pressure monitors are already equipped with a function that indicates a properly put on cuff. This cuff position control gives a warning signal and does not start the measurement until the cuff is put on correctly. The correct cuff size is also essential for accurate results. Measure the circumference of your upper arm and only use a fitting cuff.
